BAMBISLEGACY: The 'why'.
After losing my male German Shepherd (Baxter) to cancer in June 2021, little Bambi (pictured above) came home with me in September 2021. Not to replace Baxter, Bambi brought a lot of love and excitement into our family again. Bambi was not from a registered breeder, just a well meaning family who wanted to breed a litter of puppies, but who did not bother to follow through with relevant joint and genetic testing.
At 4 months of age, I heard Bambi yelp loudly whilst walking around outside - no cuts or bleeding, hadn’t tripped on anything- I took her to the vet. From hereon in, Bambi underwent numerous vet visits, trials of medications for pain management, x-rays. All of this led to the discovery that she was suffering with severe elbow dysplasia and well set in arthritis, plus muscular shortening as a result.
After being given the option of an $8000 surgery plus more pain and rehabilitation for her, we decide to euthanise Bambi at 8 months of age to stop her suffering any longer.
After this devastating loss I made it a goal to become a registered breeder with Dogs Victoria, to ensure a commitment to only breeding healthy dogs that meet or improve the breed standard. It is so important to me personally that no other family or animal ever has to go through this again.

Our Breeding Philosophy & Health Screening
At BAMBISLEGACY we believe that every puppy deserves to be healthy, happy, and loved. That's why we focus solely on breeding dogs that have excellent temperaments and are free of any known genetic health issues. All our Dams are hip and elbow scored with their results listed on the ORCHID database for public access.
Along with joint scores, all Dams are also orally swabbed and tested for all known genetically heritable diseases prior to being selected for breeding. Selected stud dogs are carefully chosen based on their health results as well. Our goal is to breed 'true-to-type' (to each breed standard) working line GSD's and Labrador Retrievers, which will become beloved family pets.
All of our puppies are raised in our home with love and care. They are gently handled by all members of our family and are exposed to different sounds and experiences, to help them develop into confident and well-socialised puppies. We provide all necessary vaccinations, deworming and microchipping before sending them to their new homes. In addition, you will receive a Royal Canin puppy pack which includes an amount of current food to continue them on, along with discount vouchers to apply to your new Royal Canin food purchases.
